QUESTIONS:

1. Tell us about yourself?

Tip: A concise summary of your professional history. Depending on the situation, you could commence from your primary school education to your secondary school and post-secondary school. Additionally, talk about relevant certifications and advanced degrees. This question is to basically summarise your CV. Expect a followup question like: Tell me what is not on your CV?

2. Describe an example of a time when you had to think on your feet in order to delicately extricate yourself from a difficult situation or solve a problem?

Tip: Your intellectual and creative skills are tested here. This is the time to describe a time when you had to think quickly and strategically to solve a problem. Here, the interviewers are not focusing on the problem, rather, it is the thought process of answering the question. Although, a problem solved in a similar role or industry gives an advantage, the process not the problem is more important. Talk about the situation; what it meant. Move to the task at hand; how and why it is important. Describe the action taken; what decisions were made? How were they made and implemented? Finally, the results; what was the final assessment? How did it end? The impact of the results? Expect follow-up questions, so do not lie.

3. Tell me what you know about the Nigerian oil and gas industry?

Tip: Here, you are expected to explain what you know about the industry. Nestoil Limited is prominent local player in the Nigerian oil and gas industry as and a prospective employee is expected to know the A – Z of the industry. What are the most pressing issues bedevilling the industry? How does it affect Nestoil? The regulations in the industry? Expect a follow-up question like: How do you keep up to date on the changes in the industry?

4.  Why are you leaving your present job?

Tip: You need to explain why you are leaving your current place of employment. This is the time to talk about the firm’s expertise, brand, exposure and training. Explain how Nestoil Limited will provide these more than where you work currently. However, you should not berate your current employer, no matter what. For instance, “although, Company ABC is a good place to work, Nestoil is a major local player in the industry (assuming your current place is a MNC. If it is not a MNC, don’t mention the point); I want to participate in the development of our assets as a country delivering my expertise across boards and developing the country. Additionally, I believe she would provide the necessary training and exposure (which is world class) to advance my career while providing excellent skills and services to the firm.”  Basically, praise the firm using relevant statistics. This is another way of asking: Why Nestoil Limited? Or why not Seplat or Oando?

5. Tell me about a time when you received criticism from your manager. How did you react to that criticism? How did you make improvements based on that criticism?

Tip: Using the STAR approach, you describe the event that led to the criticism, your reaction and what you did to improve on it. The recruiters want to know how you respond to situations that are not in your favour or receive negative feedback. Ditto, how you learn from such incidents and your relationship with superiors and colleagues afterwards.

6. Tell us about a time you had to be very strategic in order to meet all your top priorities?

Tip: Your ability to adapt is assessed here. You are expected to narrate how you were able to meet all your priorities and the eventual results achieved.  First, mention what the priorities and briefly explain their importance. Then move to strategies developed to solve them; time frame, process involved and activities done. Your event should be enchanting, real and involved in a working environment. Additionally, you should be more analytical during narration. Use figures, fractions, percentages, costs when describing events. Just be numerate. Yet again, the STAR technique comes handy.
