SUNDRY QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ON COURSES OF STUDY (V)

10

Hi Jarus

I finished from a private school in Lagos state Nigeria as a science student. I wrote WAEC and passed in one sitting. I wrote UTME and thereafter  post-UTME in a school which I didn’t choose as first choice and the course I applied for was Computer Engineering. I was not given computer engineering,  but I am now admitted to study Chemistry education. I will love to hear some professional advices on what my next step should look like? I want to know the future of Chemistry Education.

Dear Toye,

Accept Chemistry Education, and start in the school.
While studying Chemistry Education, attempt another UTME next year and see if you could make the cut-off point. If you get admission next year, dump your Chemistry Education and start Computer Engineering.
Option 2: If you don’t make the JAMB cut-off point again next year, when you get to 200 level, try crossing to better course like Chemistry (Sciences).
If that isn’t possible too, continue with Chemistry Education and make sure you make a second class upper. Sometimes, the course of study doesn’t matter much. I know education courses graduates that got job in top companies like KPMG, PwC etc.
I wish you all the best.

Hi Jarus,
Pharmacy was my dream course, I applied to UNIBEN but I didn’t make the cut-off point, so I chose SLT (Science Laboratory Technology) in a polytechnic but I was given computer science. The following year, I chose pharmacy in UNILORIN and but I was given Agricultural Science.
Please what is your advice? I really love pharmacy, should I go and start finish Computer Science or just take Agric or write UME again?

Take Agric in the university and write UME again, perhaps you may be able to get Pharmacy, your dream course the next year.

Hi Jarus,
Please between B.sc Economics or Ecostats (Economics & statistics), and Accounting which is better?
Ken

Any of them is OK, but if I must rank them, I will go like this:
1, Economics & Statistics – Because you can apply for jobs for economists as well as those for statistics graduates.
2, Economics – You only need to write ICAN to compete with Accounting graduates for accounting jobs, while your economics certificate offers you another range of jobs you’re qualified for.
3, Accounting – Accounting positions are highly competitive. Graduates of difference fields only need to write ICAN or ACCA to compete with Accounting grades – or perhaps have a edge over – for accounting job.

Hi Jarus,
Please sir, I really need your help. I had credit in all the Arts subjects I wrote in my SSCE. I wanted to read Law but my parent don’t want me to. I’m confused which course to choose again. They wanted me to read Agric, but it’s not possible with my subjects. Please I need you to list courses, best universities, subjects combination, I can do with this result:
English – B2
Math – C5
Biology – B2
Economics – A1
Agric – B2
Government – B2
C.R.K – B3
Literature-In-English -C6
Chemistry – C6 (I used it to replace language).
Please Jarus I need real help. I want to buy 2016 jamb form but I’m confused. (crying)

Hi Austin,

Can you try and convince your parent more to let you study Law, which is your desired course?

Do you have any other course on your mind? Without Physics, I don’t think you can study engineering, but you should be able to study Agric Economics. That is if you must study Agric. If you don’t want Agric, what are the other courses you like apart from Law? There are thousands of courses, so I can’t pick one from the air, except you narrow down your courses of interest.

That said, you had A1 in economics, can you consider studying Economics? It’s a very good course. I als0 studied economics.

As for universities to recommend, I normally prefer first generation universities (UI, OAU, UNILAG, UNN, ABU & UNIBEN), then second generation ones like UNILORIN, BUK, FUTs, UNIPORT etc. Any of these is OK.

I wish you all the best.

Jarus

Jameel,

Check JAMB brochure for the subject combination you will be required to write to study political sceince or sociology. But I think English, Mathematics, Government and Economics are the subjects.

Nnamdi Azikwe University is not a bad school. Banking & Finance is also OK. Just make sure you make a 2.1 at least.

A 2.1 graduate of Banking & Finance can also work in professional services firms (like PwC, KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte etc) and consulting firms (like Accenture, Phillips Consulting etc).

” can a banking and finance graduate with 1st class work in an oil company?” – Answer is yes, especially if writes and passes professional exam like ICAN.

On internship, I can’t recommend any now, you can always go to companies during your vacation and apply for internship.

    Hi Jarus,

I’ve been offered admission to study Electrical engineering@UI bt I’m currently running ND program(Electrical engineering) in d Polytechnic which I will be through with next year. The problem is I don’t know if I should run the two together or just drop the Poly program. The two schools are very close to each other just #50 bike. Attendance is important in both schools.

I’m in need of your advice because both schools resume early next year, thanks in anticipation.
