Masters in Petroleum Energy Economics or in Accounting & Finance?

10

Dear Jarushub,

Kindly advise a friend of mine. He is a member of ICAN and ACCA. He had HND in accounting and Bsc in Applied Accounting. He wants to break into O & G. He has over six years experience in Accounting and Taxation environment.
He is now thinking of adding Msc in Petroleum Energy Economics and Finance to his qualifications from University of Aberdeen. I suggested he should go for Msc in Accounting and Finance or something that will not limited his scope of responsibilities but he insisted that he wants to study new things but am looking at the futuristic of the course. We would like to hear from your team what you think about the futuristic of the course or any other one you think it would be more relevant too.

Thanks,

Ola.

Dear Ola,

First, I have always said we should not be too fixated with oil and gas jobs, because not everybody will work there, given the fact that the sector cannot absorb all qualified job seekers. We should try and explore other sectors too.

While it is still not a guarantee, I will advise he chooses Msc in Petroleum Energy Economics, ahead of Msc Accounting and Finance that you advised. He has his HND in Accounting, plus ICAN and ACCA, with 6 years experience in Accounting and Taxation, what else does he need in Accounting? Msc accounting and finance will not add much value to him – he must have known virtually everything in Accounting with what he has already. Plus Msc Petroleum Energy Economics offers a new perspective to him, widens his options. He will be able to apply for an economics position, in addition to accounting and tax.

He has what it takes to break into the energy sector – 6 years accounting and taxation experience, ACCA and ICAN, although the HND may be a snag for companies that emphasize Bsc (but not all do, especially at experienced hire level). He may go ahead with his Msc Petroleum Energy Economics in Aberdeen, perhaps that may also boost his chances (Nigerian companies like foreign degrees!). He needs to build a network, and nose for opportunities. All the best.

Jarus

You can checkout CPEEL-Ui or UNIPORT for Energy Economics related course, Am also a recently concluded graduate with GPA of 2.2 though am planning on venturing into Petroleum but am not sure whether my GPA will limit me.
    Cheers

I have a B.Sc in Accounting and I wish to proceed to master’s level, but am confused whether to go for M.Sc in Accounting or M.Sc in Taxation (a specialized area in accounting). Considering the economic trend and business environment of Nigeria NAD most part of the world, which one do u suggest I go for? Thanks

My preference is you go for professiona exams in accounting (ICAN or ACCA) or in taxation (CITN).

If you however want to go into academics (lecturing), you can consider Msc in either of them too.
