Last week we were told that investment is the use of savings to produce future income. Some of the ways we can be positioned to invest in real estate, stocks and businesses is by first of all getting good education and having a job or career.

Education is the process by which we acquire knowledge, skill, habit, value or attitude. Education enables us to become a productive member of a society and workers in the economy. Acquiring functional education, is an asset that can be used in building wealth if properly harnessed.

The most common way to get an education is to attend a school. We should not limit our source of getting education to the school, because a lot of education takes place outside the school system.

Modern society cannot survive without education. Education helps us to acquire the skills needed for everyday living like reading, writing and money management. It also gives specialised training needed to get a job or a career. People must attain certain educational level and obtain license or certificate before they can practice certain professions like accounting, architecture, law and medicine.

Investment in education is very important because we get knowledge through education, and it is what we know that gives us an edge. Parents invest heavily on the education of their children because they want them to have an edge and be productive citizens and not a liability to the society.

Government also invest in education by building schools, funding schools and training of teachers. These are done because the human capital of a nation is determined by the level of education, knowledge and skills of her citizens.

To have a functional education:

  • Education should be a lifelong process that is from the cradle to the grave.
  • The education must be relevant to the needs of the society.
  • The education must groom the learners to be well rounded citizens, by focusing on the cognitive, affective and psychomotor needs of the learners.
  • Problem solving, inquiry and application of theories should be emphasised.
  • The education should prepare the citizens mentally, physically and spiritually for the challenges of life.
  • Education should inspire young people no matter their level of intelligence with the drive to become successful actors in all spheres of human endeavours.
  • Education must develop and produce future world class leaders and truly global citizens.

Next week we shall talk on investing in our careers.  I decided to start the investment column on this note because money that will be saved and invested must come from a source which is through our knowledge, jobs or careers.
