Can my Masters in OHSE aid my oil and gas job search?

I am a recent graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with a 2.1 in Biochemistry/Microbiology. I fear I might not be able to do much with my course so I have decided to go to Petroleum Training Institute and study Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE). Please with this Masters degree, do you think I will be able to get into the Oil & Gas sector and also is OHSE one of the fields that few workers are required? I don’t wanna end up in a lab.

Dear Ugochi,
Graduating with a 2.1, from a good school like UNN was a good place to start. There is nothing wrong with Biochemistry/Microbiology too, although technical fields like Engineering and Geology are in more demand in the Oil & Gas industry. Enrolling for OHSE in PTI is another good step. HSE generally is in hot demand in the Oil & Gas industry, being a highly hazardous industry that requires dedicated safety departments. HSE department in a typical oil and gas company may be made up of between 3 – 15 personnel, depending on size/operations of the company. Although more and more people have discovered this and are also enrolling for this field, hence fueling competition. PTI is also a good school and respected by employers in the oil and gas industry. Considered together, there appears to be a decent chance for you.
A final word that I used to mention in oil and gas industry advice: don’t be too fixated on the industry, spread your options as well.
