The ongoing NNPC recruitment is easily the biggest news in the Nigerian Labour Market this week.

Some of the candidates that wrote the test have been anonymously discussing the questions and the answers they chose in online forums like HotProForum and Nairaland.

Some of the candidates who shared their experiences said there were 15 English questions, 15 on maths,15 on computer and 15 on current affairs and general knowledge.

Here are some of the questions as shared anonymously by many candidates on online discussion forums like HotProForum and Nairaland. We have also used Google and some other resources to research correct answers .

  1. Shape of an egg is ellipsoid, not sphere. Although there are some online contents that suggest sphere, ellipsoid is the more convincing option as can be seen on wikipedia and elsewhere.
  2. Calabar was the first capital city of Nigeria, not Lokoja
  3. 1/6 + 3/8 = 13/24 but we heard 13/24 was not part of the options, so the option to choose may be 17/24 which is the only option that has correct denominator
  4. How many protectorates were in Nigeria by 1900? Options included 1, 2, 3 and 4. We really are not sure of the answer to this but internet research shows that the British divided Nigeria into 3 protectorates (Lagos, Southern and Northern) in 1861 and the 4th, Oil River Protectorate was established in 1885. Lagos Colony was merged with Southern Protectorate in 1906. The Southern and Northern protectorates merged in 1914. Some records call Lagos a colony, so we are not sure whether to count it as a protectorate. There are also Wikipedia records that say Oil River protectorate was changed to Niger Coast Protectorate in 1893 and merged with Southern Nigeria protectorate on 1 January 1900. So this is a very tricky question. The answer could be 2 (if Lagos Colony is not counted as a protectorate and 1 January 1900, the day Niger Coast Protectorate ceased, is not counted), or 3 ( if Lagos Colony is not counted as a protectorate but 1 January 1900, the day Niger Coast Protectorate ceased, is counted with 1900) or 4 ( if Lagos Colony is counted as a protectorate and 1 January 1900, the day Niger Coast Protectorate ceased, is not counted as part of 1900 , the base year used in the question).
  5. Nigeria Civil War took place between 6 July 1967 to 15 January 1970
  6. The full meaning of OPEC is Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (not “Communities” as the closest wrong option says)
  7. DVD is the only input and output device from the options (not printer or scanner)
  8.  A computer system that connects different branches in different regions is called Wide Area Network (WAN). Not Local Area Network, Metropolitan Area Network, or Regional Area Network
  9. Wiki is a term used for any website anyone can add to, delete or revise (not any site anyone has free access to – which does not make sense, because anyone can access almost every website)
  10. ECOWAS was formed on 28 May 1975, not in 1976, or on 25 May 1975, the nearest wrong answer to the correct answer.
  11. Aminu Kano was the option that was never a regional premier (not Dennis Osadebe, an option that confused many people)
  12. The school children were on academic excursion
  13. The governor of a South East state has to be Igbo, not Hausa, even if the event happened in the North
  14. The governor is the sympathiser as the passage expressly says “the governor commiserated” with the robbery victims, not the transport company.
  15. From the options, Kenya is the only country where Swahili is spoken, not South Africa as many people said they chose.
  16. Uganda is not an Francoophone country, it is Anglophone.
  17. The headquarters of African Union is Addis Ababa in Ethiopia
  18. The nationality of the current AfDB president is Nigeria
  19. Antonio Guterres is the current UN Secretary General, not Ban Ki Moon
  20. The government as well as its agencies is (not are) …
  21. Shehu Shagari was the President of Nigeria in 1979
  22. For the question on cricket team of 12, with 6 forming a team, someone said: “I solved both and my answers were 210 and 84 for 2 included & 3 excluded respectively”. He is correct. If 3 are to be excluded, it means, you want to choose 6 from 9 people (12-3=9), which is 9combination6 (9C6)
nCr = 9!6! × (9 – 6)!
84

For the first one: If 2 are always included, it means you only have to worry about forming a team of 6-2=4 (not 6 anymore) from the remaining 12-2=10 (not 12 anymore). 10C6=210

23. Laws made by Local governments are called Bye-laws, not Edict, not Decree, not Act

24. Neo-colonialism was coined by Kwame Nkrumah, not Mandela or any of the other options

25. An equidistant triangle has 3 equal sides

26. 13km equal 13,000 meters – a kilometer is one thousand meters

27. The head of Nigerian central bank is called a governor (if anyone misses this, that person should be flogged o)

28. The attorney general is the chief law officer of Nigeria, not any Chief Judge or the Chief Justice or the Senate President

29. The Soviet Union collapsed in December 1991

30. What was the major impediment of Nigeria development since 1960? Options were: bad leadership, corruption, and overdependence on crude oil. This looks like a subjective question as anyone can prove whatever he chooses.

31. A system that allows multiple users to use one computer at the same time is called time sharing, not multi-tasking

32. The right spelling of privileges is privileges, not priviledges

33. Three-man committee, nothing like three-men committee or three men committee

34. Humphrey Davy invented electric light bulb, not Walter Alan. LOL – some people said they were expecting to see Thomas Edison here. Were he to be on the list, 90% go pick am o. Double wahala.

35. A server computer is a type of computer or device on a network that manages network resources (not super computer).

36. Bar code is mostly used in a supermarket, not military or computer laboratory or air traffic. This should be simple nah. Una never buy something for Shoprite before? That thing wey dem dey flash your bought items with na bar code.

37. If the school team that were coming from Kano and attacked on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway were “returning to Ilorin”, as the passage says, that means they came from Ilorin, not Kano.

38. Domain name is part of URL
39. Nigeria became a republic on 1 October 1963
40. There are 774 LGs in Nigeria
41. South Sudan is the newest country in Africa
