BEST TIME TO START ACCOUNTING PROFESSIONAL EXAM

1

Good day, sir. I sent you a mail about 2 years ago to seek your advice on what career choice to make. I am happy to inform you that I have graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University with a first class  in accounting, and I have plans to start my ICAN exams this November.
However, certain factors are posing challenges to my plan. I couldn’t get money for tuition so I figured it would take me more studying time to prepare adequately for the exams. With the NYSC orientation programme running between October and December, there is a good chance my preparation could be hindered by camp activities.

Right now, I’m not sure whether I should stick to my plan, or wait till next year when I should be able to get money for tuition to enhance my chances of passing the exams. Currently  I’m 22, and I noticed most good jobs usually require persons not older than 24 or 25. I really want to get things done as soon as possible to give myself the best possible chance out there.

Your advice would be much appreciated, sir.

Dear J,

Congrats for graduating with first class honours and we are happy to have contributed to that through the advice we gave you two years ago.

To me, tuition is a bonus for students that are above average, which you definitely are, given the fact that you made first class.  I didn’t study accounting, but wrote ICAN exams and didn’t go for tuition classes. How much more you that studied accounting – and made first class in it for that matter.

Please raise money and go and register for ICAN now. 3 weeks camping for NYSC should not affect your preparation. As a matter of fact, no one stops you from reading in camp.

This is the right time for you to start before you become study rusty. I believe you can pass without attending tuition classes. In any case, most of my friends that won ICAN prizes never attended tuition classes.

On age, 26 is more popular as cut-off age than 24. Most companies actually do use 26, not 24. So by the time you finish your NYSC, God-willing, you will be below the age limit.

I wish you all the best.

Congrats Brother. I am happy for you. Kindly go and register as Jarus has said. I had HND in Accounting with upper credit, also started during NYSC, I didn’t attend any tuition centre, though I had a reference in PE 2, also one in PE 3, before I qualified, remember I was an average student with a mentor from your school, OAU. Go for it Brother. All the best. Congratulations.
