Working in a small company can be good, but also bad at the same time. Some prefer to work in small organizations, while some look down upon it. Though there are advantages as well as disadvantages to working in a small company, it is ultimately up to you to decide which suits your preferences better.

Cons Of Working In A Small Company

  • Making Mistakes Will Cost You

    • The staff is significantly small in small companies, so any mistake or blunder that you might make will instantly come back to bite you. You will not be able to cover up your mistakes, and you will have to pay for it along the way. Not to forget, you will always be held responsible for anything that went wrong.
  • You Will Have Troubles When Switching

    • If you are planning to use a small company as a ladder to a big company, it might be disadvantageous for you. Bigger companies might not have heard the name of your company, so they might find it hard to recognize your efforts.
  • You Do Not Have Room For Growth

    • In the bigger companies, there are a lot of departments and positions that you can look up to when it comes to promotions. In a small company, there is very little room for promotions since the staff is limited.
  • You Will Not Have Access To Resources

    • The resources are usually very limited in small companies, so you might not get paid well or you might not be able to carry out the projects with greater resources than in bigger companies.
  • Less Opportunities For Training

  • Bigger companies host a lot of training workshops and programs for their employees, while smaller companies don’t have many resources to do so. In a small company, you have to rely on polishing your skills on your own.

Pros Of Working In A Small Company

  • You Have Control

    • You do not get lost in the shuffle in a small company. You can control your work, decide your levels of flexibility and assess yourself to greater detail than you can in a bigger company.
  • You Have Bigger Responsibilities

    • When you work at a small company, you get to try your hands on greater tasks than you would at a bigger company. When you leave the small company, you have greater experience as compared to someone working in big company.
  • You Have A Supporting Staff

    • The office-staff is supportive and understands one another in smaller companies. If you are sick and cannot make it to work, you might actually have a colleague or two drop by to check how you’re doing. And say for instance you work in a dissertation consultancy firm you’ll get to work with expert dissertation consultants, and ultimately you get improve your skills easily.
  • You Do Not Have To Face The Office Politics

    • Everyone is thirsty and fighting for power in the bigger companies. On the other hand, you experience a friendlier environment, where you are comfortable and get rewards for what you deserve in a small company. Plus, you do not have to worry about someone trying to degrade you or take away your credit.
  • All Your Contributions Will Be Appreciated

  • You will not have to be sad every time you contribute deeply to a project and you receive no gesture in return. In a small company, all your efforts will be appreciated and even rewarded, sometimes even with bonuses and incentives.

The above pointers can help you decide if you are fit for a small company or you should look for bigger ones. If you are fit for a small company then by all means, go ahead and apply away instantly.
