SWITCHING CAREER FROM MEDICINE TO FINANCE

0

Hello Mr Jarus

You are doing a good job here.
I studied medicine but I want to switch to financial services sector, say, the Big 4 or an investment firm.
I am writing skills level of ICAN in May. I really wanted to write ACCA or CFA but the cost of those two really put me off.
How do I go about this switch? How do I land a job considering my background and my age (28)?
I am finishing with NYSC in May.I have started applying for jobs though.
I will appreciate a response sir.
Thank you.

Hi Dr. Chi
It is not out of place to have medical doctors in Finance. The current COO of Vetiva, a leading investment firm in Nigeria, is a medical doctor. The current president of World Bank is a also medical doctor.
You have done well by starting ICAN. Don’t wait till you’re qualified before you start applying to finance firms. Start applying right away. Use informal networks, too. One HR folk or executive may be interested in your CV and get you called for interview.
Start reading about Finance – follow media channels like Bloomberg, read websites like mergersandinquisition.com, vault.com, breakingintowallstreet.com etc
I would have also advised the Big 4 professional services firms as somewhere to at least try out as stepping stone, but at 28, and without experience, you’re not likely to be listened to.
Try these local investment institutions like Afrinvest, Vetiva, Merristem, Cardinal Stone etc, just anywhere to start. Those may not be so rigid on age.
I would  also advise getting a good MBA.
I wish you all the best.
