Sundry academic questions from a fresh undergraduate

0

Good Day Sir, Mr. Jarus,

I’ve read few of your posts on Nairaland and I found them very educative and interesting. So I’m having some questions to ask you but before that I would like to introduce myself in a short way. I’m a fresher in one of the federal universities, going for Civil Engineering.
1). How do they calculate CGPA in the university like in OAU?
2). People talk about borrowing courses from other departments to maybe boost your CGPA.How is that possible?
3). How are competitions, scholarship programmes, writing external courses abroad possible?

Please I hope you will respond to all my questions in the mean time.Looking forward to hearing from you as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance sir.

Dear Brother,

First, as an undergraduate, no matter how fresh, you should be familiar with how CGPA is calculated by now. That should be part of your orientation, whether self-sought or organized orientation. This is something you should know before your first two weeks in school.

1, CGPA is calculated in OAU the same way it is calculated in any other school. It is not for me to spoon-feed an undergraduate with this basic information. Please ask any senior student in your school.

2, Yes, students borrow courses from other departments for all kinds of intentions, including but not limited to boosting GP. But there is an allowable limit. Your departmental handbook or whatever  information manual will tell you all the range of courses/departments you can borrow from. Using borrowed courses to boost CGPA is about opting for the historically easier options within the range.

3, Concentrate on your studies for now. When you perform well and make a good grade, you stand scholarship opportunities abroad.

Please make friends with serious, senior students who will teach you all these. Walk up to the best student in the set before yours, and ask for guidance. They are usually willing to assist. Your school mates, and not the internet, is your best source of information here.

However, if you are “just going” to the university, but not a fresher yet (I guess you confused these), then I can understand you.  Again, your best bet is making friends with seniors and asking questions on all these.

All the best in your studies.

Jarus
