Return to my 50k/month job or go ahead with farming?

Dear Jarus,

I need your advice on something quite important. Three months ago, I was suspended from my job for a crime I am not guilty of (I suspect my boss does not want me and other accountants again; he suspended me and forced another accountant to resign). Since then, I have been carrying out a research on how to start and run a farm(palm tree, cassava, maize etc). I have even bought a hectare of land in a village close to my hometown in Kwara state for that purpose and secured more hectares on lease. All I am waiting for is the season to start (February/March).

I must tell you I am already feeling like a boss (lol), when, suddenly, I learnt after the investigations that my boss had been mandated to call me back and he has done that. The questions now are: should I go back? Am I strong enough to start my own now? Won’t I be better off being on my own? Wont he (my boss) organise a bigger trouble for me (since he was forced me back in the first place)? Now I am at crossroads. With the job, my N50,000 per month is guaranteed, but can’t have more. With my farm, N600,000 per year is not sure, but millions can be expected, depending on factors that cannot be accurately projected.  Jarus, what do you think I should do?

W.O

Tough one. But if you can sustain yourself without the 50k per month job, then I will advise you don’t go back to the job, but go ahead with the farming plan. But if you have enough reserve or flowing source of income to sustain yourself before harvest, please ignore the job recall for farming.

FEEDBACK

Thanks. I think I should be able to sustain since the harvest of maize is just between 3 to 4 months, cassava 9 to 12 months, and teh palm being a perrenial crop takes between 3-4 years before harvest. The truth is jsut that I am afraid of the possible antic my boss will bring (he wants to be in charge of finance). The feasibility report of thsi farming is also too good to believe…..180% profit potential! I wonder how rural-urban migration is justified if these things are like these.

I advise you go ahead with the farming. As for rural-urban migration when opportunities like these abound in the villages, well, we all falsely feel we are too educated to be a farmer, and think it is only when we wear ties and work in Lagos that we can be respected back home. Now that you have left Lagos and returned to your hometown for farming, I wish you all the best.  I envy you (lol).

Have you prayed about this? if yes, I will advice you to follow your passion, and may God grant you success in your endeavours. May this venture be as big as some agricultural companies like Presco and Okomu that are making profit after tax of billions of Naira by tilling the soil in Nigeria., Amen
