PATH TO INVESTMENT BANKING CAREER: AN EVALUATION

0

JARUS, the household name that have change people lives both academically and career-wise, you are one guy people don’t give praises to.

You really impacted in my life tremendously, started reading your posts on Nairaland right before I was admitted into the university in 2012 after which you flagged off your blog the following year which I am an
ardent reader of. This email is actually overdue; that notwithstanding, thank you very much.

After reading your tips on how to make a first class; immediately I got to the university I was psychologically prepared to do just that. I will be sitting for my final paper by Monday, my first semester 400level CGP is 4.55. I am a student at a state university in Nigeria; due to how intimidating Ife graduates are I almost took another Jamb while in 200 level. LOL. I love challenges.

I have always been learning from you from afar, but now that I am about to start a career I will like to plead with you to be my mentor. My career choice is Investment Banking which you definitely know it
was because of you (I know you are in another industry though), first got to hear about it from you it sounds interesting, technical and challenging which really interest me. One of the Eggheads from your blog advocated for job experience in place of Msc immediately after school, I will like to know your take on that. I am 23.

There is this column on your blog titled “Who’s Who in Corporate Nigeria”, you did one on ABIODUN SANUSI. When I was reading his profile it was just as if I was reading mine from the future. I have exact
plan both professional exams wise, academic wise (Wharton) and finally career wise (investment Banking). I was very impressed and filled with great joy while reading his profile, I tried contacting him
through LinkedIn but couldn’t. I will really need specific mentorship from him, if there is a way to contact him on my behalf I will really appreciate that.

Thank you very much Sir for what you are doing, you reward is surely in Heaven. May Allah bless you. Any general advice on the right step to take will really be appreciated.

Dear Joel

Thanks for the kind words. All praises are due to God.
1, Yes, I support job experience before Msc. Worst case scenario here, you will make a strong 2.1 – which is great; just draw up your CV immediately you graduate and circulate. Try to actively search for job. Get a good Msc or MBA later. While looking for job or working, start writing ICAN as soon as possible.
2, Investment Banking is great, but don’t limit yourself to it. Try the Big 4, consulting firms, etc. Just anywhere to start. You can always move to IB along the line.
3, It is great to look forward to Biodun Sanusi, a smart young man we dubbed Investment Banking Heir Apparent in Nigeria. If he doesn’t respond to your  LinkedIn contact, there is no harm in that. You can still follow and learn from someone from afar. I never got to meet the man I looked forward to as a kid, Dr. Femi Adekanye, until much later; yet he influenced me a great deal.
I wish you all the best.
