JOB SEARCH ADVICE FOR A BANKING & FINANCE GRADUATE

0
Good day Jarus.
Thank you for your inspiring career posts and mentorship.
I graduated in 2013 from the department of banking and finance with a 2.1, and I completed my NYSC in March 2015; but I have not been able to land my ideal job which is to kickstart in a financial institution in order to become a professional in finance field in the future.

However, I do not have substantial experience on this path and feel its a hindrance to employability.

Though I intend to further my education, I will like to gain experience first because of time.

Please I need your candid advice on how to begin and more.

Thanks and God bless.

Joyce

Dear Joyce,

Thanks for the kind words.

I think two factors are responsible for your situations:

  1. Macroeconomic issue: There is a general lull in the employment market in the country as a whole. Companies are doing more of laying off than recruiting. It’s a sorry situation. It appears you guys are entering the labour market at the wrong time.
  2. Lack of information: Despite the bad macroeconomic situation however, people are still getting jobs – no matter how few. Job hunting goes beyond waiting for public vacancies on Jobberman etc. Companies recruit every now and then without advertising. So I think you need to be close to information; you need to use both conventional and unconventional job search tools like networking, unsolicited applications etc.

You completed your NYSC less than one year ago. Not the worst of situations in my opinion.

You should also not limit yourself to the finance industry. For starters, I think just any decent job should be fine. I see adverts by banks and other companies for management trainee positions (that don’t require experience), keep applying. Not having experience is no hindrance.

Try small companies, like the applying to the factory on the next street, for example, as accountant. Or even an accountant in a Supermarket.

I don’t know whether you’re still below 25, but I think firms like PwC, KPMG, Accenture, Ernst & Young, Deloitte etc recruit every year and some are currently recruiting. Try them.

I wish you the best.
