IS WORK EXPERIENCE COMPULSORY FOR OIL & GAS INDUSTRY JOB?

0

Hi Jarus,

I am a graduate from University of Buea in Cameroon, but I am a Nigerian. I studied petroleum engineering and I graduated with a CGPA of 4.43 ( 2.1). I just finished service. I am also good at networking, just as I’m bilingual.

Here go my questions: Without any work experience can I work with any indigeneous smaller oil companies or companies like Schlumberger, Halliburton? Would it be easy for them to hire me? Why I didn’t ask about companies like Chevron and co is because I know they require working experience a lot or can one without experience still get into company like Chevron or be a trainee there?

Considering my present situation please give me advice which will be possible for me

Thanks a million

Peter

Dear Peter,

The answer to all your questions is ABSOLUTE YES. I don’t know where Nigerians see this information they bandy around that work experience is compulsory for entry level job. That is why it is called ENTRY LEVEL. That is why it is called GRADUATE TRAINEE.

Some companies, like Shell, consider between 0-3 years experience for their entry level positions. Did you see zero there? Yes. Zero means you’re still qualified if you have never worked anywhere before.

All the companies you mentioned have GRADUATE LEVEL positions that don’t require you to have any experience. Yes, most of them lump people with 1-3 years experience with you to compete for the same position, but it doesn’t mean you cannot outdo them. Once you’re shortlisted with them for the position, all of you are on the same plain. It is left for you to prove your mettle.

I can only advise you to look for opportunities in the sector. Monitor adverts for graduate level opportunities. Put your networking skills to work too.

But don’t limit your search to these companies alone, as there are tens of smaller oil companies, especially oil servicing companies, that are much easier to get job with.

I wish you all the best.
