I studied Agriculture, but my interest lies in Marketing, HR and Communication: What do I do?

Good evening sir,

I am an ardent follower of JarusHub and I really appreciate the virtuoso work you have been doing, more power to your elbow sir.   I am Olutola, a fresh graduate of Agriculture from the  University of Ilorin. I’m currently observing NYSC and I’ll be passing  out by October. I realized I have more interest in Marketing, Human  Resource, Communication than in Agriculture or any other pure science  field.

Due to that fact, I’ve decided to secure employment in any good  organization using the graduate trainee platform. One of my year 2014  goals is to secure employment in 2 or more organizations and have the  privilege to choose.

The question is, how does the goal become a reality and not just end up as a “wish”? On my part, I’ve started applying for  job openings that do not require NYSC discharge certificate and I’ve  been reading articles that have to do with the Nigerian Labour market. I finished with a 4.0 CGPA out of maximum 5.0 and I have some impressive  strengths. I know I still need a whole lot to get my goal accomplished  and that’s why I’m sending you this mail. I know that “He who asks,  will never go astray”.

I’m surprised you like marketing when people run away from it. But that’s just by the side.

Yes, graduate trainee platform is a good avenue to achieve your aim. many of such platforms ask for first degree in any discipline, and after recruitment, you are posted to different units in the company. I think you’re on the right course.

I would have said you should consider writing CIPM if you wanted to be an HR professional but for the fact that it’s just one of your options for now, you may put that on hold.

Good for you, you had a strong 2.1. Start throwing your CVs around. Subscribe to job boards like Jobberman, Ngcareers etc Try firms like PwC, KPMG, Accenture, Deloitte, FCMG (Nestle, Cadbury, P&G etc) and maybe financial institutions. Such companies have structured graduate trainee programmes where course of study is not so relevant. Once you get an offer in any of them, you can tailor your desired career by asking to be posted to the department of your desire.
