Finance qualifications to aid my property management career?

Good morning Mr. Jarus,
Thank you very much for your blog (I just stumbled on it). It is a great work you are doing. I am quite interested in developing myself in finance related areas. I graduated from O.A.U with a second class upper degree in Quantity Surveying. I worked in the branch development unit of a bank before going for postgraduate studies in Construction Management in a UK university.

I am in Nigeria and currently working in a property development company as a cost manager. While I enjoy property development as a career, I would love to equip myself further with finance skills. Over the 8 years of work in property development/construction, having the right financing is so critical as the first step to the success of a project ( I am talking multimillion dollar project).

What professional exam would you advise me to learn the finance skill? I have really thought of CFA but would that not be an overkill? It will be nice to be knowledgeable in wealth management, asset management etc…but do these areas cover property financing and property investment management areas.

In my own opinion, he needs just some working knowledge of finance to help his property management career. A formal course of study might not be what he needs. I think he should get good books on different topics in finance to meet his need. He should also consider a specialised course, for instance in real estate finance as this would have been designed to meet his need. Maybe an online masters in real estate finance would help him the most.  Most other bodies of knowledge in finance are so wide and going through exams may not be best for his expressed need.
