DILEMMA OF AN ACCOUNTING GRADUATE

Dear Jarus,

I am one of the lucky Nairalanders that received your eBook “The road to Victoria Island” when you gifted 10 copies on World Book Day and I must appreciate your generosity. Again, I commend the real life experiences share in the book.

For you to advise me properly, I need to say that I graduated from the department of Accounting, Unilorin, with Second Class lower and currently, I am serving with less than five months to go. I would like to seek an advice on some issues.

Firstly, I want to enroll for three computer programs (Peachtree, SPSS, Prince2) which I think would be beneficial to me as an accounting student. I want you to verify or possibly eliminate and/or
suggest any other computer programs you think would be beneficial be it in electronic accounting or project management or in data analysis.

Again, I’m at a cross road on whether to start Masters program or register for ICAN or ACCA. Reference to your ebook, the feedback you gave to the last career crossroad that was treated is that “I
personally advise people (in our line) to start with ICAN. ICAN, to me, is the best foundation for professional certifications. But ACCA can also serve that purpose, so you are on right track with ACCA.” I need you to advise me on which to pick as I think ACCA would be be better being that it is international.

Thanks as I anticipate your response.

Dear TJ,

If you write Prince2 to boost your IT skills and credential, it’s fine. I’m not too sure about peachtree and the likes, but no knowledge is wasted. Read this past dilemma we treated on JarusHub to have a broader idea on accounting software knowledge requirement.

Between Masters and professional qualifications, I will say start with professional exams because they are more relevant to our line. I don’t however know what you to do Masters in. That may give me a further clue on the relevance of Masters at this time.

ACCA is fine if you have the funds to finance it because it is more expensive than ICAN.

All the best.

Jarus

I HAVE A QUESTION SIMILAR TO THIS.
I HAVE A MASTERS DEGREE FROM A UK UNIVERSITY.
I WAS IN ICAN PE1 LEVEL BEFORE THE RECENT CHANGE IN SYLLABUS.I HAD PASSED TWO PAPERS. HOWEVER, WITH THE CHANGE IN SYLLABUS I STILL HAVE THREE PAPERS TO GO IN THE SKILLS LEVEL BEFORE I CAN PROCEED TO THE PROFESSIONAL LEVEL.
AM AT A DILEMMA OF WHETHER TO OPT FOR ACCA OR CONTINUE WITH MY ICAN EXAMS.
PLEASE ADVICE BASED ON CHOICE AND COST. THANK YOU.
