Deficiency in key WASSCE subjects and my CV

22

Dear Jarus,

May I say thank you for your generosity. Please how could one handle the issue of deficiency in key subjects in one’s WASSCE which were now cleared in the following year, though in another high school as an external candidate? I ask because I feel only the deficiency-free certificate should be used in the CV, though it would not be able to claim that it is from year 1 to 6 . In short, I would like to know if that thought of mine is correct.

Thanks.

Dear Idolys,

In my article, 5 Common Mistakes Nigerian Job Seekers Make, while driving home my point that working on factors that ease job hunting should start from as far as secondary school, I highlighted the fact that things as far back as O’level result can make a difference in job search. That is the point here again.

You said you didn’t pass key subjects in your first attempt at WASSCE, but went ahead to pass them in another attempt, in another school. While making your results in the school you had your secondary education is the best for you, your case is actually not bad, especially since you made all the key subjects in the second attempt, and not combining results.

You get around this by presentation. Let’s say you had your 6 years Secondary education at ABC High School (2001-2007) and made your results the next year (2008) at second attempt in XYZ Grammar School, it is simple. Present your CV this way:

XYZ Grammar School

SSCE Certificate – 2008

That way, you have not lied, because you only quoted the year you obtained your certificate. You just presented in a favourable manner. If you had written 2002-2008, it would have meant another thing, that you actually went to that school for 6 years. What is important is the year you obtained your certificate which must correspond to what you have on your certificate and of course the certificate will also carry the name of that school. Certificate is meant to evidence the fact you have finished your education, not how long. So just quote the year of the certificate. I need not tell you that you don’t need to put on CV or take along with you the deficient certificate. So that is the way to get around your situation.

All the best.
