DCT12092013: Know your employer

DAILY CAREER TIP 12/09/2013

Shortly after the infamous ‘Oga at the top’ gaffe that turned Nigeria into one large comedy hall, I did an article that was published on this platform and in some newspapers like BusinessDay.

It is worth reiterating again that many employees just don’t care about knowing anything about their workplace other than what directly concerns them – their job and salary increment emails!

I narrated how in a conference I attended in Ghana last year, a representative of one of Nigeria’s biggest oil firms could not answer a question about some business combination arrangement her company just consummated, even when it was all over in the news and the session facilitator, an external party to her firm, was the one that had to educate her about what was going on in her company.

Truth is, many of us are actually not concerned about what goes on in our workplaces. We don’t even read those state-of-the-company emails the corporate communication departments send from time to time.  We see those emails are junks.  Other than the people directly in Financial Reporting units, many staff in Finance departments don’t even know the company’s PAT in the prior year at the tip of their fingers, without recourse to quick check of Financial Statements. This is not good enough. An employee should be duly informed about what goes on in his/her company.
