Crossing from Bank to Oil & Gas sector

0

Dear Jarus,

I stumbled across your website while searching for the right professional course to do.

I hold a B.Eng degree in gas engineering since 2010. I graduated from Uniport with 2.2.

I couldn’t get an oil and gas job, but within that period I got a bank job and for 3 years plus I have been working in the bank.

Now I am tired and scared of working in the bank because of the job insecurity and stress. I was thinking of doing ACCA since I don’t have any oil and gas experience it might be difficult getting into the oil and gas, so switching to the finance sector.

But please I need your own opinion. What do you advise, should I still go ahead with oil and gas or do you know any good professional course I can do that would make me very relevant with my course I read and banking experience as a marketer?

Please your response would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Dear Jane,

1, Your experience in bank is expected to be useful. I will advise you continue to stay in bank while exploring opportunities elsewhere. If possible, see if you could move from marketing to another department in the bank or in another bank so as to broaden your area of experience.

2, You have almost 4 years experience now, you may not be an entry level person again, so your grade may not matter much again.

3, Try and start ACCA or ICAN asap to further boost your profile.

4, Include in your CV that you’re a student member of ICAN/ACCA and start sending your CV out. I expect that within your almost 4 years in bank, you would have met people in other organizations that would have formed your network. Explore this opportunity. Talk to them. Send your CV to them. Package your CV well. Emphasize your achievements in bank.

5, Your degree in gas engineering may also be helpful. Don’t limit your search to oil and gas.

Whatever the outcome, keep pushing.

I wish you all the best.
