CAREER PROSPECT DILEMMA OF AN ECONOMICS STUDENT IN AN AGRICULTURE UNIVERSITY

0

Dear Jarus,

First, I need to give a thumbs up for the magnificent work you are doing at Jarushub.com. With the information given at the career section, you have widened my career horizon. I am also an ardent follower on Nairaland.Thank you.
I have some issue which I would love your honest opinion on…
1. I am an undergraduate studying Economics at a Federal University of Agriculture in Nigeria. Jarus, you have had a feel of the labour market and I need ask that is there any discrimination as regards degrees awarded by these institutions on courses that do not bear their mandate in my case a university of agriculture?
2. I am considering running an ICAN-ATS programme concurrently with my first degree so that by God’s grace I would have AAT cert which will waive a lot of papers when I proceed to do ICAN professional. I have no idea about d feasibility of running these programs simultaneously. But since you have an ICAN cert I believe you know. So honestly, what’s your take on this or should I just wait till I graduate?
3. This is based on 1 above. Transferring to another 1st gen University say UI,OAU etc has been on my mind(through their transfer programmes). I just completed my 1st year though. But I ask, is this necessary? Or how feasible,if this is the case?
I have strong passion for economics. I am currently on a 1st class CGPA.
Regards,
Jide

Dear Jide,

1, You’re studying a good course, economics, in a federal university. Any federal university is recognized in the labour market. From my experience, once you make a good grade from a recognized university, you have a good chance of being shortlisted for job tests/interviews. It doesn’t matter whether it is a university of agriculture or technology or non-specialized university. Try and make at least 2.1

2, You just completed your year 1, I advise you start ICAN ATS if you know you can combine it with your academics – by the time you graduate, you will have ICAN ATS on your CV in addition to Bsc Economics and that may make a difference in an accounting related job opening; but if it will affect your studies, you can defer it till you graduate and start at professional stage like I did in my case. Just start immediately you graduate, before or during NYSC year.
3, If it’s possible and easy to transfer to OAU/UI, I don’t have any problem with that, principally because of access to more information and challenges; but if it’s not easy, don’t stress yourself on it, complete your studies where you are. Schools hardly matter again these days.
I wish you all the best.
