CAN ONE STUDY MEDICINE WITHOUT PASSING MATHEMATICS?

2

Good day Jarus, I recently checked my o’level result and had C6 in Chemistry, Physics, Civic Education, Agricultural Science, English, and Biology and got E8 in Math, F9 in Catering craft , and absent in Islamic Religious Studies.

Can I study MBBS (Medicine) with it? If no, please what else can I study with with those grades?

Dear Zaharaddin,

I passed this to one of our analysts, Dr. Semiu Akanmu

His advice:

You cannot study MBBS. Even, if you have that same C6 in Math, many universities that still use O’ level in assessing students’ competence will not offer you MBBS.

In sciences generally, I doubt if you can get any course without a credit pass in
Mathematics.

So, you are left with two options:

a) Explore Arts and Humanities, may be you can have any school that is still considering pass in Mathematics.

(b) Resit for WASSCE with an amplified zeal to earn more than C6 (oriyomi) grade in all these courses you have earlier passed, and also in Mathematics.

Option b is the best if I were you.

Dr Akanmu has said it all. C6 in critical science subjects doesn’t present you as one that will make a great Medical or engineering undergraduate. He advises you to retake your o’level, but my inclination is that you should look elsewhere other than engineering and medicine.

First, you have to retake WAEC and make sure you get credit in Math, it is very critical and will haunt you in job search in the future if you don’t.

Second, after getting credit pass in Math, if you must go with Sciences, try biological sciences (Biochemistry, Microbiology etc) or agricultural sciences ( Agric science, agric economics etc).

But if your second attempt at WAEC is great (you got not less than C4 in Chemistry, Physics, & Maths ), you can try engineering.

I wish you all the best.

Jarus
