CAN A FISHERY GRADUATE WORK IN AN OIL & GAS COMPANY?

1

Hi Jarus,
I came across your articles online and I’m very grateful I did. I am a graduate of Fisheries and Wildlife from a recognized university in Nigeria (though I had a second class honour of lower division). I recently concluded a masters degree in Fisheries management also in a recognized university in Nigeria.

I, like most graduates, desire or covet a job backed with a mouth watering reward, knowing that oil and gas at the moment offers that I have been faced with a regular and haunting question of, what is my relevance in the sector with a fisheries certificate?

So, what chance(s) do I have working in the oil and gas sector? Is there any professional course I have to do? Knowing my undergraduate degree is well not up to the requirement.

Or would you advise I give up the desire or dream?

Dear Soji,

My candid opinion is that you should try other sectors and not restrict your search to oil and gas sector. You had a 2.2, from a course that is hardly relevant to oil and gas industry.

I could have advised that you should write ICAN/ACCA, look for professional services firms (PwC, KPMG etc) and after few years experience with them, find job in oil and gas sector using experience in these companies, but this road is blocked too as these companies don’t recruit 2.2 graduates.
I think you should look elsewhere. Oil and gas will be a tough one. Not sure any professional qualifications can help here.

While looking elsewhere, don’t rule out venturing into private business in fishery, which is where you are trained.

I wish you all the best.
