An ‘oyel curse’ from Owerri!

2

No, I don’t mean ‘resource (oil) curse’ – the paradoxical situation where natural resource endowment, rather than do good for a nation, turns out to be the factor stunting its development.

I received the email below this afternoon from an angry reader  who had earlier sent me email seeking my advice on how he would break into the Oil & Gas sector. It was one of the many emails I received after I published my articles on how to break into oil and gas industry in Nigeria.

Bro, GOD doesn’t feel happy when he puts some people in a certain position so that they can help others one little way or the other and they overlook it, yet they pray and ask GOD for help every day. My brother there is GOD. THANKS FOR WASTING MY TIME (capitalization mine).

Now, this is real curse, as in epe gidi, not resource curse. Why did the reader resort to that missile of an email? He sent me an email few days ago, obviously after reading my posts on oil and gas job here, asking how he could break into the oil and gas industry. Let me share our exchange (of course, with his name hidden):

He: Hi bro, I hv not heard from u. Sorry dough i got ur add on nairaland thought it wise to seek for ur advice

Me: I have been busy with a seminar I have on Saturday. Next week by God’s grace.

He: I got ur message, d person that is meant to help me get a job in an oil company said he can’t do anything with that my result which is pass in chemical engineering, everyone in my family so believe he can get a job for me what can I do now so that I will be qualified to work in an oil company, please make inquiry if need be, I will be very greatful and GOD will reward u

He (today): Bro,GOD dosnt feel happy when he puts sm pple in a certain position so that they can help others one little way or the other nd they over look it, yet they pray nd ask GOD for help every day. My brother thr is GOD. Thanks for the waste of my time waiting.

I got not less than 10 requests for advice on oil and gas career after publishing that article last week. Last week was a very busy one for me, as I put finishing touches to the planning of the just held Jarushub seminar. As it works here, I publish all the requests (protecting identity of questioners on request). Since I couldn’t do a post on each of the more than 10 requests I got, I planned to do a series on QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ON OIL & GAS CAREER IN NIGERIA when I settle down after the rigour of the seminar that held over the weekend. My friend’s request was one of them, and like I told him in the email exchange above, I planned to treat it this week. This is just Tuesday – week just entering 2nd working day, and this impatient dude sent me this curse-of-a-prayer, even after telling him to give me time.

This one na real oyel curse o.

No be small thing o. Wetin oyel  go cause for Nigeria sha. lol

In any case, I will treat his case with others when I have time to do my Q&A on O&G series by weekend insha Allaah.

Waoh. Got touched by the exchange. But just like you said, please treat his case. The guy wrote out of frustration and for me, I understood his plight. I also wrote you a note (note to jarus) too and you told me at the seminar that you have not been chanced to attend to several mails which I saw for myself on the conference day. Do find time to treat the mails. Allah is your strength

The guy should first of all get a job or be productively engaged. he should develop himself, he needs to get the right attitude, if possible he can try to get additional professional and academic qualifications.

If he is waiting for an oil and gas job at all cost, he may be jobless for a long time to come, I will advice him to have a plan B and get a marketable skill that will be relevant in any industry.
