A CORPER’S POST-NYSC JOB FEARS

0

Dear Jarus,

I am a graduate of Economics from a Nigerian University, currently writing my ICAN examination. I have no experience and I am almost through with me NYSC. I sincerely do not know what I am going to do next post NYSC, because I have not been able to secure a job. I am interested in investment banking or any job finance related.
P.S: I’m 20 years old and I plan to get an ACCA qualification after my ICAN.
Please I need your advice and that of other professionals on what might be the best thing to do.
Thank you.

Dear Maureen,

1, You have age on your side. I assume you made a 2.1 or better.
2, You don’t need to have experience. Everyone started somewhere. I also got my first job after NYSC without experience. Just look for openings in Graduate Training/Entry level openings. Subscribe to website like Hot Nigerian Jobs etc
3, Try and complete your ICAN. It can boost your chances, but you can still get job without it. No harm in registering for ACCA after your ICAN.
3, Monitor developments in investment firms like StanbicIBTC, Vetiva, Meristem, Cardinal Stone, UBA Capital, FBN Capital etc. Stalk them. Check their website from time to time, connect with people that work there (informal networking can be helpful, as, sometimes, these firms don’t advertise openings).
3, Don’t narrow your search to investment firms only.  Try companies like KPMG, PWC, Accenture, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and maybe banks that recruit every year. Just watch out for their openings.
Finally, bear in mind that there is a general lull in the country (and globally), so even if the job doesn’t come within few months after your NYSC, don’t despair. Keep pushing.
I wish you all the best.
