5 AMAZING TOOLS TO RESEARCH A COMPANY IN NIGERIA

1

Whether you are invited for job test or interview or you want to submit a proposal to a company, it is always good to research the company. I know someone that “shortchanged” himself by not researching the company well. He desperately wanted to leave the company he was working in, and unknown to him that the new company he was talking to (which also desperately needed him) was capable of paying him double what he was earning in his then  current job, asked for an amount that was far lower than what his qualification and experience commanded. He got to the company and realized he was the least paid of peers in that pay band. That is what poor research can do.

The following tools can be useful in researching a company, in Nigeria:

1, NAIRALAND CAREER OR JOB SECTION: There is hardly any information you need on any Nigerian company that you wont get on Nairaland. The anonymity offered by Nairaland makes people share a lot of helpful information, on anything! If you have test with any decent company, just search the name of the company + test and you are guaranteed a past discussion on it will pop up. If it doesn’t, just register and start a thread/topic on either of these sections and you are sure someone will come and respond.

2, JARUSHUB: Being a professionally run and non-anonymous website, we respect the privacy of companies on JarusHub. However, within acceptable limits, we share relevant information that are useful in researching a company before going for interview in particular. Most times, we share generic information that will be useful in acing interviews, but we have a platform, JARUSHUB WORKING-IN SERIES, where we share company-specific information. We also have a premium service, JARUSHUB INTERVIEW COACHING, where candidates outsource the research to us and we coach them in a one-on-one classroom situation before going for any interview.

3, GOOGLE: What more can one say about Google. Although Google will eventually land you into a website like Nairaland or JarusHub, it remains an all powerful too to research a company before test or interview or proposal pitch. Just type the name of the company + test or interview on Google and you will see a lot of relevant information that can aid you.

4, LINKEDIN: Go to LinkedIn and search for people that work or have worked in the company. Politely contact them and tell them you have a test or interview with them and you will like to know one or two things about them. Try as many people as possible, because some will respond, some will ignore. Another way of doing this is looking for the mutual connections between you and the persons and pleading with the “intercessor” to connect you with the target persons. Ask what you should expect.

5, FACEBOOK: Although people, especially those that work in top companies, hardly disclose their place of work on facebook, in the course of interactions over time, you are likely going to have an idea of the workplace or industry of a good number of your facebook friends. You can easily PM them to ask one or two things about their company or industry when you need to research the company. You may even put up a facebook post as “Please if you work with or knows anyone that works with XYZ company, kindly inbox me, I have an important info”. I’m sure you will get someone to PM you. You can then ask your questions via private message.

Which of these tools have you used in the past? Is there any other one that has been helpful to you that we did not mention? We want to hear from you.
