Q&A with a student: Chemistry or Computer Science?

2

Hello Jarus,

I am one of the numerous people who always visit your site for self confidence, advice and motivation. May almighty GOD continue to bless you and your team.
My name is Musa. I lost my parent when I was in JSS 3, but thank God for my hardworking aunt who is still taking care of me. I graduated from secondary school 2017/2018 and am currently studying for Bsc chemistry at Bauchi state university. Although I love chemistry but I had never wanted to study it. I had wanted to study  chemical engineering or any mathematical science because I find maths very
easy.

My aunty disliked the course and told me to apply for medicine at UNIMAID which I did but never gained admission with 212 in my UTME. My school will begin computer science this year and I have been in employed in a cybercafe not far from campus so as to help myself.

Please Jarus, I need an advice on whether to step down for computer science or keep on with chemistry. My current GPA is 4.28, CGPA not yet out.

Thanks.

Dear Musa

From your GPA and from what you wrote here, you look like a brilliant young man. I will advise you continue with Chemistry. Don’t waste another one year by starting all over again. Just continue with Chemistry. The course of study does not matter much. You can develop your computer skills by the side.

If you decide to start all over again, you are not getting younger and that may affect you when you graduate as you could have grown older than the minimum age required for many jobs.
So keep on with Chemistry. Study hard to make sure you graduate with at least a second class upper. Stay close to JarusHub to read our views and advice on career matters.
All the best.

I studied science laboratory technology for my national diploma and finished 2016 with distinction. I want to further and have Bsc but I’m confused on the course to go for via direct entry.

He should just continue with the chemistry course, no knowledge is wasted, since he has the knowledge of computer, it will also be useful to him. Starting all over again by studying computer science will only waste the time and money you have spent studying chemistry.
