Caveat: This is not based on hard data but on observations. It is compiled by JarusHub editor and 2 other contributors to this portal. Note also that this is not based on who earns the highest salary, but who has potential to earn decent income with his degree. Potential is the operative word here.

Here we go:

10. Mass Communication/Journalism: Mass Communication will remain a marketable because not many universities do it, but many institutions need it. The downside is, journalism is not seen as exclusive preserve of MassComm graduates, as graduates of almost any course are recruited by news outfits. Yet, the course still stands a decent chance.

9. Law: Maybe the supply is fast outstripping demand and affecting pricing, Law has declined in economic value. However, it remains a Top 10 course. Whether you decide to practice or go into corporate world, or you decide to go into allied things like real estate agency, you still stand a decent chance of earning decent income with a Law degree.

8. Nursing/Laboratory Science: Nurses don’t earn mouth-watering pay, but they are hardly jobless. I see Nurses change jobs like clothes. Hospitals and clinics – private and public – are springing up everyday, and a medium size clinic needs at least 4 Nurses. Some may have as much as  20. Same goes with Lab scientists, although in lower demand.

7. Mechanical, Electrical & other related Engineering courses: Engineering courses generally sell in the oil and gas industry. In addition these courses are also asked for in other major industries.

6. Economics/Accounting/Finance: The good thing about Economics is that it fits into many roles. I hesitated to include Accounting here because Accounting degree alone without professional qualifications is not usually so helpful; however, I included it because I expect the accounting graduate to do the needful of writing professional examinations after his degree. Even without professional qualifications, you can still get a decent job with Accounting degree only in the many small to medium scale firms that require the services of accounting graduates. Finance is another great course. The three courses, sometimes alongside Management and Business Administration, are usually in hot demand, although supply still exceed demand and many graduates of these courses are still jobless.

5. Computer Science/Computer Engineering/IT courses: IT professionals are in hot demand the world over. Nigeria is not different. With special IT skills, your chance is even brighter. The downside is, anybody can learn IT skills, even if he doesn’t study computer engineering.

4. Geology: It is also a course that places you in good position to penetrate the much-sought-after oil industry.

3. Chemical/Petroleum Engineering: These courses have the potential to fetch you the fattest pay check after graduation because the companies that ask for them are those that pay heavily – the oil companies.

2. Estate Management/Architecture/Building/Survey/Civil Engineering: A degree in any of these courses places you in a good position for self-employment. Even from school, Architecture students make money drawing plans for people. We consider these courses the second most marketable courses in Nigeria.

1. Medicine: Medicine may not earn you N500k per month at entry level, but it is the course that guarantees you job the most. I have never come across a jobless medical doctor. The pay may not be as heavy as the Chemical engineering guy in the IOC, but you are guaranteed of better-than-average income as a doctor. Medicine is number 1 on our list.

Most importantly, I share the opinion of this gentleman that it is you, and hardly your course of study, that matters in marketing yourself.

Excerpts:

My argument has always been that it is not really the course you study in the University that makes you, it is the uniqueness in you. The contemporary world of work is interested in excellence, the stuff you can offer, not in your discipline per se. This is why any education is expected to develop individuals’ three domains of learning: the cognitive, the affective and the psychomotor.

In other words, education is the process of developing one’s mental faculty, regulating and improving one’s attitudes and character as well all acquiring doing abilities.

The three domains are otherwise known as 3 h’s: the head, the heart and the hands. Any educated person, apart from having facts in his head and being of good character is expected to be able to use his hands to do things. Every student/ graduate should know how to do something with his/her hands – sowing, plaiting, writing, painting, designing, farming, etc.

In the strict sense, not a course that is high in demand. However, course of study doesn’t matter much. So irrespective of the course of study, you can achieve almost anything.

by international,mi mean courses that would be recognized outside Nigeria also.

Economics is not a professional course unlike Accountancy. It doesn’t have professional certification or courses. You can only go for Masters and Phd or take executive or academic courses in branches of economics.

Try OAU, UI or UNILAG. If getting into these schools in proving difficult, any recognized institution that offers economics is OK.

I assume – going by your name – that you are in the South West.

You can use political science degree for most of what economics degree can fetch you, except a job that specifically requires you to have a degree in Economics. You may try moving to Politics, Politics and Economics (PPE) in hat same department. But if you ant get that too, just continue with Pol Science and make sure you make at least 2.1.

A good school no doubt; but generation is by year of founding. 6 Univeristies are generally referred to as first generation in Nigeria: UI, OAU, UNN, ABU, UNIBEN, UNILAG

    • Jarus 7 April, 2015 at 15:27 Reply

Being a first generation is by the time of establishment. Only universities founded before 1975 are first generation universities and they are six: UI, OAU, UNN, UNILAG, UNIBEN, ABU

Men u’re the “Bomb” great job. I felt really discouraged at how u downplayed the relevance and the though challenge that looms ahead for prospective accountant because I’m currently studing accounting at Unilag “DLI” with a “CGPA” of “3 point” I’m in 300level. On what premise are u basing this ranking of job prospcct in Nigeria. I was strongly advised against studying economics while searching for admission hence pinched my tent with accounting. I have deep passion for the course since childhood because of my love for numbers. Pls what are my chances of securing a decent job with a 2.2. At the end of the day. And what would u possibly advise me to do at this point. Pls advise. Thanks a million

One thing we all fail to understand is that we have to decide for ourselves what we want to become. Everyone wants to become something in life which he knows better than any other person, just try on building on it with the relevant course without specifications because no course that is of no use. Wishing us all success

nice write up both i most disagree with you placing nurses at no 8
mind you we have two kinds of nurses
1)auxillary nurses(those with no university qualifications)
    2) bsc nurses(those with bachelors degree and university qualifications
i recall you saying nurses are under paid probably less than 100k at entry level…hmm maybe you are refering to auxillary nurses whick pay package ranges frm 20k- 80k depending on the hospital and years of experience.
but if you are refering to bsc nurses then i disagree with you a bsc nurse at entry level are placed at level 9 next to doctors and for there pay package currently now ranges from 150-300k depending on the hospitals and locations mind you as there years of experince increase so as there pay package increass i know some nurses thay recieve higher pay than some doctors arround 450k monthly and for you to say a graduate doc recieve less than 500k monthly you most be dreaming some doctors at some federal hospitals recieve 400-500k monthly and it may increase to 800k as they go higher
yuh didnt even mension pharmacist in your list which are well paid personels and are hardly jobless….pls make research and review ur list i rep mbbs

hi sir, i disagree with u regarding what u said about everyone can do computer engineering/computer science or IT.. first and foremost, Information Technology is in different phase. we have phases for end users, phases for app developers/programmer and phases for Network/computer engineers…looking at the basics in IT were we have Microsoft office productivity tools in which end users acquire basic knowledge about computer systems by implementing graphics design etc…the people in this phase have little or no knowledge about a computer systems.. mind u…..road side computer engineers are not to be classified under IT professionals because they don’t have what it takes to solve complex issues.. computer engineering or computer science is beyond ur local space… many road side computer engineers that underwent 3 or 6mnth training in a local computer school have tarnished the reputation and images of IT professional making many people think that IT is just about opening computers and repairing.. IT is way beyond that. it is true that every body must be a computer literate or know the basics of computer i.e data processing, Microsoft office productivity tools, visual basics, corel draw and Photoshop. that doesnt mean that everybody can study computer engineering and computer science…. this are all different things entirely… been able to study computer engineering or comp science means that u want to understand the internal operation of a computer system and how it functions… a small child can be a computer literate that doesn’t mean that he or she can study computer engineering or write programs using high level programming languages using C++, python, C# or perl…and even shell script and also solve complex issues when it arises. thanks you

Good day sir! Kudos to you for the good work you are doing here! But I will to correct something you said about #Geography not been a marketable course. I don’t know where you get your data from but…I will like you to know that the Rapidly changing world demands that students are prepared for entries into careers that do not yet exist. To that extent, #Geography is very unique amongst academic disciplines. The main virtue of the discipline lies in the intellectual discipline which it gives through. Its systematic regional and thematic courses. This provide not only basic or background knowledge that can lead eventually to a wide of vocations, but probably more importantly, a general attitude of the mind in which a problem is viewed from as many different angles as possible. A #Geographer should be, and usually is a broad-minded person who is knowledgeable about the complexities of societies, economy and environments, has a critical inquiring mind, versatile and trainable person, skilled in compilation and use of Maps and statistics. And capable of writing sound collative and interpretive reports. These obviously are qualities that are in great demand in all careers concerned. With management of environment and human affairs.
Graduates with a good understanding of the complex interplay of economic, political and environmental forces, as is the case with #geography graduates, obviously are highly employable in a variety of professions. It is therefore important to note that, while there are no many job titles as “geographer“, there are many types of positions that fits well with a degree in #Geography…. Some of which are
    •environmental scientist/consultant.
    •climatologist.
    •weather forecaster.
    •hydrologist
    •teacher/lecturer.
    •soil conservationist.
    •land surveyor
    •soil surveyor
    •industrial planner
    •property manager
    •investment/system analyst
    •land Economist
    •land/community developer
    •town and/ or regional planner
    •cartographer
    •demographer
    •traffic manager
    •travel agent/specialist or tour guide
    •map curator
    •park ranger
    •GIS programmer/database management
    •Remote Sensing analyst
    •computer programmer/mapper
    •marketing Researcher
•officer in Navy, Army, Road safety, Air Force, custom, or immigration.
    •foreign Service.
    ETC….
I was surprised to see tha #Geography was not included in your ranking…. I am a geography student in one of the federal institutions in nigeria and I have already started seeing my opportunities… #geography is cool!!! #Geoxplorer!

    • Assistant Editor 21 July, 2015 at 17:41 Reply

Sit for GCE to have better grades, economics in particular. Credit in Economics is compulsory for most social sciences courses, which Psychology is part of. But I think this result is good enough to get you admission into psychology department, being a less competitive course. Try and push it.

But this year I did well in my utme and post utme exam and it is very certain that I would gain admission this year. But am not still happy I chose to study metallurgical and material science. I chose this course because I wanted admission this year so I didn’t go for a competitive course. But I later regret making that decision. Now am thinking of writing jamb again at first have always wanted to study chemical engineering but now am contemplating between chemical engineering and computer science and again pls is it advisable for me to write jamb next year cos I will be 21 next year or I should just go on with metallurgical and material science engineering thanks

May I begin by saying that I find ALL the posts in this blog insightful. Do keep up the good work. Please, I would appreciate your guide on a few things: I have a B.sc in Mathematics but with an intense passion for the Finance/Accounting/Auditing/Consulting world; I intend enrolling for an Msc and would like your advice on which course to go for in the Finance field. I would love one with a high prospect for career growth across diverse sectors of the business world. And, can I get any which wouldn’t require a PGD? Also, aside ACA, which professional certification (that suits my aforementioned interest, highly recognized, and pocket friendly for a fresh graduate) would you advise I go for? What IT certification(s)/skills do I need to excel, especially in the Accounting line? Thanks again for your great works through this blog.

    1) Is it compulsory to do a professional course relating to your discipline?
    2) what professional course(s) can I do both for the one relating to my discipline and not relating (if it is not compulsory to have a professional course relating to my discipline)
thank you sir and am sorry my questions are coming this late.

Depends on the field. In social sciences, course like Sociology and Political Science are less chosen by students, hence less competitive. In the Arts, German, French, Dramatic Arts, Linguistics are not so competitive. In the Sciences, I would think Chemistry, Biology etc are less chosen. All engineering courses are competitive.

You need to have credit in WAEC in Physics, Chemistry and Biology for most science courses. As a commercial student, you would not have written Physics and Chemistry in WAEC. The minimum is for you to get a private teacher to prepare you for WAEC and write those subjects.

I have BSc Accounting. I was forced by an uncle to choose this course because I was orphaned & he had to sponsor me. I wanted Food Technology or French because I’m a science student & I love anything Food or crop related. I also like French so I wanted to study either French or Food Technology but my uncle refused & made me do Accounting. I graduated with second class lower but I didn’t enjoy the study at all.

Now I want to go for Masters but I’m confused. I would like to do MSc instead of MBA, please advice me on the choice of my passion & Accounting.
Should I do MSc in Accounting or will I be allowed to do MSc in French or Food Technology without BSc in them first?

    • Assistant Editor 10 May, 2018 at 10:25 Reply

I don’t think you can do Msc French or Food Technology with a first degree in accounting. Msc Accounting is not so useful, professionally, except you want to go into lecturing. For an accounting graduate that does not want to go into lecturing but into professional world, professional exams like ICAN, ACCA etc is the next way to go.

However, since you don’t like accounting, I’m not very sure your degree is relevant to these fields you said you want to go into. If you want Msc, there are many fields, e.g Finance, that your Bsc Accounting qualifies you for.
