HR DESK WITH NASIR KOLAWOLE

HR Master

Further to the introduction of our HR Desk I welcome you once again to an interactive, educative and informative desk.

We will hit the ground running with a real life case study this week.  The subsequent article will center on our stakeholders on this ‘Desk’ – Prospective Employees, employers and employees. We will discuss the relationships between the parties and talk about what binds them, if any.

THE CASE STUDY

Mr Jogunomi has a medium size company which specializes in the business of marketing of shoes and bags with staff strength of about 20.

Mr Jogunomi recently ventured into another line of business (soap making) in a different location and with an entirely different name. Mr Jogunomi needed the service of an Admin person in his new company and Obotunde (a fresh graduate who has been searching for employment for a long time) was introduced to him.

After a brief discussion with Obotunde in his office (his shoe marketing outfit) Mr Jogunomi sent Obotunde to the HR manager of his Shoe marketing company, to fill application form for documentation purposes. Mr Jogunomi told the HR manager that Obotunde will work with him in his new company, so the HR Manager only took his information and send him back to her boss (Mr Jogunomi)

Thirty days after, it was discovered that Mr Jogunomi did not discuss salary with Obotunde, he only instruct him to resume and he did. Although Obotunde indicated his expected salary in the form he filled at the HR Manager’s office, nobody negotiated the pay with him before he resumed.

Obotunde’s expected salary is N60,000 and Mr Jogunomi is offering him N40,000. He has already worked for one month before all this come to the fore. What should Obotunde do? What are his chances in pushing for a redress in this case?

Kindly send in your input and contributions before Wednesday so that we can wrap it up with mine.
